Cadenza at the 2019 Fringe

24 August 2019 at 20:00
Greyfriars Tolbooth & Highland Kirk, Edinburgh, EH1 2QQ
  Musical Director: Jenny Sumerling

Puccini: Messa di Gloria
Haydn: Te Deum in C
Haydn: Insanae et vanae curae
Janet Wheeler: Alleluia, I heard a voice (Scottish première)
with
Ross McLean (tenor)
Andrew McTaggart (bass/baritone)
and
The Cadenza Fringe Orchestra, led by Robert Dick

Tickets: £15, £13 (concessions), £4 (children)
can be reserved in advance by contacting the Cadenza Concert Manager online,
from choir members, at the door on the night, or from the Fringe Box Office.

Following five sell-out concerts at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Cadenza is delighted to be returning to the stunning surroundings of Greyfriars Kirk for another exciting programme of choral music, performing Puccini’s magnificent Messa di Gloria.

The Messa di Gloria was an early work, first performed in 1880, when Puccini was only 22. It was not heard again during his lifetime and only eventually performed in 1952. Unashamedly operatic and full of good tunes, this is a work not to be missed!

Acclaimed soloists Ross McLean, Tenor, and Andrew McTaggart, Baritone, will be joining us for this performance.

Contrasting with the Puccini is Haydn’s Te Deum, a late work full of jubilation, followed by his Insanae et Vanae Curae.

Continuing the jubilant mood, Cadenza is delighted to be premièring Janet Wheeler’s Alleluia.

Come and join us for a very special evening of choral music with choir, soloists and orchestra.

Our Fringe concerts are extremely popular.  We were officially sold out every year between 2013-16, and again in 2018, following verification of ticket sales by the Fringe Society, and attracted capacity audiences for many years before that.

Early booking is therefore advised to avoid disappointment, so why not join our mailing list and automatically receive electronic updates on all Cadenza concerts and activities! We will not expose you to any other unsolicited emails, nor share your address with other organisations, and you can remove your name from our mailing list at any time. If you have any concerns or questions about our electronic mailing list, please contact us.

Make Music Day 2017 with Cadenza

21 June 2017 at 19:30
Broughton St Mary's Church, Bellevue Terrace, Edinburgh EH3 6NE
Make Music Day is an annual, world-wide celebration of live music.  This year Cadenza is offering an opportunity to discover how the choir works, to listen to a (fairly) standard rehearsal, and to hear a preview of the repertoire to be performed at our annual Edinburgh Festival Fringe concert, which this year features Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, Rheinbergers' a cappella Mass in E flat 'Cantus Missae', and two motets by Monteverdi, 'Cantate Domino' and 'Christe, adoramus te'.

The evening will begin with an active vocal warm-up, then continue with a rehearsal of selected sections of the Fringe concert repertoire conducted by Libby Crabtree.

We welcome anyone interested in choral music, either as a listener or as a prospective singer, and hope that this will both encourage visitors to come to hear the performance of these pieces in Greyfriars Kirk on 26th August, and perhaps to return to Broughton St Mary's Church in September, this time to participate in our annual Open Rehearsal.

Broughton St Mary's is a beautiful early 19th century church in Edinburgh’s New Town, where Robert Louis Stevenson’s grandfather was an Elder. It is a perfect venue for choral music performance, with an excellent acoustic and spacious enough to seat a large audience. A warm welcome is extended to everyone, of all ages, who would like to join us and help us to celebrate Make Music Day.

And in keeping with the principles of Make Music Day, entry is FREE.

For more information, contact us via our website or tel: 0131 662 8721.

The Cadenza Fringe Orchestra

About our 2016 programme, Music Director Jenny Sumerling says
"Posterity has a habit of elevating the obscure and neglecting the famous. Thus it is that Cherubini, hailed by Beethoven as 'the greatest living composer', is today often forgotten; 'If I were to write a Requiem, Cherubini's would be my only model', Beethoven continued and the work was performed at his funeral in 1827. Schumann's opinion was that it was 'without equal in the world'. Berlioz considered that 'the decrescendo in the Agnus Dei surpasses everything that has ever been written of the kind'. Cherubini was anxious to reflect the spirit as well as the meaning of the text and so, to avoid any unwelcome associations with opera, he decided to dispense altogether with soloists. It is a work of remarkable intensity, full of attractive choral and orchestral writing."
